This course, jointly organized by Professors Claussen, Högl, and Tenzer, provides essential basic knowledge for Master students in “Management and Strategy”.
Prof. Claussen starts off and addresses the question of how firms can implement strategies to create and sustain a competitive advantage. We introduce students to strategy-related theories and apply them to real-life examples, especially from technology-intensive industries. Students will learn to analyze the external and internal environment and how functional-level, business-level and corporate-level strategies can shape firm performance. Prof. Tenzer will focus on the international dimension and examine cultural and institutional frameworks in global management and analyze the impact of diversity on communication, leadership and knowledge sharing in multinational corporations. Prof. Högl will examine key aspects of human behavior in organizations, particularly as they pertain to processes of leadership, collaboration and organizational transformation/change. Across the entire course (lectures and tutorials), students will be exposed to fundamental aspects of management and strategy, current research and literature in these areas as well as salient theories and concepts.
Note that there will be no track choice this semester. Every student will attend, and the exam will consist of, all three parts.
