To understand how the convection in the Earth's mantle impacts the
development of mountain ranges, mid-ocean ridges, and volcanism, computer
simulations are crucial due to the lack of suitable measurement techniques. The underlying mathematical model involves elliptic partial
differential equations, the solutions of which have to be approximated
by numerical methods. Immense computational power, optimal algorithms, and efficient software are crucial to handle this task.
The
seminar HPC (high-performance computing) for Geodynamics intends to
give a glimpse at the various challenges that have to be addressed to
build the numerical algorithms and software capable for the approximation of PDEs at scale. Accompanied by a semester-long software
project, the participants are given a hands-on introduction to
* discretizations and fast solvers for a fundamental elliptic PDE,
* performance engineering,
* parallel programming,
* data export and visualization.
It is recommended that participants have a solid background in programming and linear algebra. Although there will be no strict constraints regarding the project's design, the course will mainly guide with examples in C++.
The seminar will be held online via Zoom. Time slots TBD.
