Causality is central to much of empirical work in economics. After formally defining the concept of causality through potential outcomes and identification of causal effects, the course introduces several research designs in which identification of causal effects can be established. The course shows the formal identification arguments, discusses empirical examples, and practical aspects of implementation. Examples of research designs covered are matching, instrumental variables, differences-in-differences, and regression discontinuity designs.

In this course, the fundamental concepts of statistical modelling and corresponding approaches are introduced. Firstly, the wide range of regression models is covered. This comprises generalized linear and additive models, mixed models and duration time/survival models, including different accelerated failure time models and Cox’s proportional hazards model. Furthermore, latent variable models, measurement errors and beyond mean regression are discussed. Strategies for model selection, dependence modelling (copulas), functional data analysis and basic aspects of directed cyclic graphs (DAGs) as well as causal inference complete the lecture and exercise classes.

Overview:
This course is part of the Econometrics Track in the Master's Program in Statistics and Data Science. It is also well suited for advanced master's students in Economics and PhD students.
The course covers the foundations of classic nonparametric methods, with emphasis on kernel estimation of density and regression functions. It combines rigorous derivations of the statistical properties of estimators with simulation studies and empirical applications, such as regression discontinuity/kink designs and average treatment effect estimation.

Die Veranstaltung wendet sich an Studierende im Bachelor Statistik & DataScience (3. Semester).
