Overview
In this Bachelor's seminar, we investigate the theoretical foundations of security through the lens of formal logic, emphasizing how rigorous reasoning frameworks can express, analyze, and validate fundamental security properties. A central theme is the explicit treatment of trust assumptions and attacker capabilities, which form the basis of any meaningful security argument. Students explore how logical systems provide precise languages for modeling knowledge, belief, authority, and information flow in adversarial settings. The seminar examines how these logics capture subtle distinctions between what agents know, what they are allowed to do, and what an attacker can infer or manipulate.
By formalizing threat models and trust boundaries, participants learn to reason about system behavior under varying assumptions and to identify where security guarantees depend on idealizations or unverified premises. Through theoretical analysis and selected case studies, the seminar highlights how logic enables the systematic derivation of security properties, the detection of flawed assumptions, and the construction of proofs that remain valid even in the presence of powerful adversaries. Students gain a deep understanding of how formal reasoning shapes the conceptual foundations of secure system design.
Preliminary Knowledge
A successful participation in the lecture "Logik und Diskrete Strukturen" or similar lectures is highly recommended for this seminar. For some seminar topics, a successful participation in the lecture "Formale Sprachen und Komplexität" or similar lectures is also recommended.

This seminar explores current developments in artificial intelligence, from foundation-model architectures and learning methods to agents and scalable computing infrastructure. Students select one topic, review and critically assess the relevant literature, and present their findings in a written seminar paper and an oral presentation. Topics can be scoped for either Bachelor’s or Master’s level.

Over the past years, there has been a surge in new AI-based image generation and editing tools that do not require special computer skills, but are usable by laypersons, artists, and designers. This has been largely influenced by the publicly available, open-source "Stable Diffusion" model (https://ommer-lab.com/research/latent-diffusion-models/). Now many researchers, start-ups, and artists are investigating downstream tasks without the need for a high-performance GPU cluster to train a base model. Moreover, a number of closed-source services such as Midjourney and Open AI's Dall-E 2 have also drawn a lot of attention.
The foundation of this technology is the task of generating a single image solely based on a textual description of what should be depicted in the image. Examples of this can be found on websites such as https://lexica.art/. This technology can be extended to include additional information, such as depth maps, and allows for flexible image editing by changing existing objects based on text or removing parts of the image and filling it while paying attention to the remaining image. The latest advances also allow for generation or modification of video as well as rendering 3D scenes.
These topics and more will be covered in our seminar, where we will investigate AI-based image and video editing and generation techniques. Each student will focus on a specific topic. The objective of this seminar is then to investigate the connection between these techniques and the students' respective fields of study and the greater societal and research implications. We will explore potential applications and issues in applying this technology. Each student will give a presentation of their ideas and write a report about the technique and its potential applications and implications.

Content
To profit from advances of today's hardware, tools and approaches need to be able to efficiently use multi-core architectures. This seminar discusses techniques that parallelize the software verification process to profit from today's multi-core architectures. On the one hand, we look into techniques that split the work, e.g., the state space or properties to be analyzed, and distribute the work among different workers, which basically run a sequential verifier on the split. On the other hand, we look into parallel algorithms for software verification. Each seminar topic will cover one of the following topics.
- Simple Static Partitioning
- Ranged Symbolic Execution
- Staged Symbolic Execution
- PChop
- Parallel Bounded Model Checking of Multi-Threaded Programs
- Ranged Program Analysis
- Parallel Block-Abstraction Memoization
- Distributed Summary Synthesis
- Parallel Predicate Abstract Model Checking
- Parallel ReadsFrom-SMC
- BigDataflow
- Parallel Trace Abstraction
