What do artists, critics and theorists mean when they say or use ‘the digital’? The discussions in this seminar range from the techno-deterministic understanding of the digital as a technology; the ontological debates on the binary nature of its 0s and 1s; diagrammatic understanding of the digital as an organising force in the world; to the increasing substantiation of the digital by artists in terms of human and material categories in post-digital practice.

We will read and discuss text by authors such as Alexander Galloway, Yuk Hui, Sven Lütticken or Vilém Flusser. In addition to artistic examples from the Vorlesung “Media Politics of Contemporary Art: From Canvas to Post-Digital Practice”, we will look more closely into new media art practice, including a potential excursion to ZKM Karlsruhe.

No previous experience of courses with digital media art is necessary. It is advised to accompany this course with my Vorlesung this semester: “Media Politics of Contemporary Art: From Canvas to Post-Digital Practice”, which will provide the necessary backdrop of media art history.

All course materials as well as your course work is delivered in the English language. You will receive support from me in improving your writing skills for international publication, and will not be penalised for any minor grammatical or syntactic errors. We will focus primarily on the content of your arguments, and work on areas of improvement.
