This course will focus on the importance of sports to Jewish communities in a global context from the 19th century to the present by examining the history of sports such as boxing, baseball, football, basketball, and the significance of Muscular Judaism in Central Europe and Israel. The course will also explore Jewish identities in soccer clubs around the world, the terrorist attacks against Israeli athletes at the 1972 Olympics in Munich, and the politics of football and basketball in Israel,. The course will also consider the roles of Jewish figures in shaping national identities, fan culture, sports media, and club ownership.
