The phrase “letter of the law” might invoke the written word, but there is so much about the law and legal culture that has distinctly visual dimensions. From the performances in court to the symbols of justice and authority; from the black robes of the judges to the many visual (re-)imaginations of trials in art, on film, or stage. This seminar will explore, discuss, and analyze the connections between law and visual culture across time and across media. Starting with an introduction to the general field of law and the humanities, it will present different approaches from history, cultural criticism, media studies, sociology, and philosophy.
