On March 27, 2025, President Donald Trump signed Executive Order 14235, titled “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History.” Reminiscent of George Orwell’s 1984, it particularly attacks the Smithsonian Institution and the National Park Service, arguing that they have falsified history. This is not the first time telling US history in a critical way has come under attack. In the seminar we will also look at earlier attempts to censure historical scholarship and to suppress critical history. An attempt will be made to hear from several US colleagues via Zoom.
