This seminar (taught in English) examines Buddhist epigraphic and iconographic sources from ancient Southeast Asia from a historical perspective. How did Buddhism penetrate the religious practices of Southeast Asian societies? The seminar will focus primarily on Khmer (Cambodian) sources, while drawing comparisons with neighbouring societies, including the Mon, Pyu, Burmese and Cham.
During the week of 22 June, students participating in the seminar will be asked to attend the international workshop ‘Cambodian Buddhism: A “Longue durée” (long-term) Cultural Phenomenon,’ held in Munich.
Previous knowledge of Sanskrit, Buddhism and/or Southeast Asian History would be an advantage.
Students will be regularly required to read academic articles in English related to the sessions.
