General information

This practical course builds on the lecture “Biological engineering” and is most suited for Msc students of the 1st semester. Bsc students of the 5th semester are invited to attend the practical course.

Content

Biology is now a science of engineering. Only until recently, biology became mechanistic and quantifiable, identifying the molecular components and how they mechanistically work together to function in a certain process. This is because two revolutions in biology happened: 1) The molecular revolution, knowing with the genes and proteins as its basis; and 2) the genomic revolution, which allows to learn about the molecular components in a fast way and at a large scale. Biological engineering applies the engineering principles of “analysis, design and synthesis” to solve problems in human, animal and plant life.

The aim of this course is to make students think like an engineer. Students will be familiarized with the paradigm of engineering “measure, model, manipulate, and make” across different areas of biology. We will explore different applications of biological engineering, i.e. improving plant nutrition and photosynthesis, and exploring plants for molecule and vaccine production. While we focus on plant sciences, we will also discuss examples from other areas of the life sciences.

The course will be delivered as a 2-weeks course. The evaluation of the practical course in the form of reports and oral presentations.

Practical course

The practical course will be theoretical works, engineering a novel trait. The first week of the practical course, we will review a selected example of engineering a novel trait in plants and students will be tasked to select engineering a trait, explaining why they have chosen this trait and what is the ultimate goal. In the following, students will develop an outline how to create this trait. In the second week, students will develop a detailed strategy how to create this trait, including the sources of materials, suitable methods, addressing potential challenges and troubleshooting, alternatives, as well as considering regulatory requirements for successfully implementing the novel trait. Each step will be discussed in oral presentations and thereby reviewed. At the end of the course, students will submit a comprehensive report, describing the engineering of a novel trait, each step, material and method properly documented.

Skills

At the end of the courses, students will be able to:

  • Explain concepts and prime examples of biological engineering, both in principle and theory.
  • Demonstrate a detailed understanding of the technologies used in biological engineering.
  • Develop a detailed protocol to engineer a desired trait
  • Discuss current knowledge and apply critical thinking to the applications of biological engineering.

We will highlight different applications of biological engineering, i.e. improving plant nutrition and photosynthesis, and exploring plants for molecule and vaccine production. While we focus on plant sciences, we will also discuss examples from other areas of the life sciences.

Life is specified by genomes. Every organism, including the crops that produce our daily foods, has a genome that contains all the biological information—the DNA—needed to build and maintain a living example of that organism. The biological information contained in the DNA is divided into genes, discrete units of the genome. The complete set of genes represents the genetic constitution that makes up the genotype of an organism. Crops and cattle often have complex genomes to achieve desired agronomic traits. This makes crops and cattle vulnerable to infection by co-evolving pathogens and poses ongoing challenges in modern breeding to keep up with demands from an increasing world population.

This aim of this seminar is to develop an understanding of the unique genetic makeup of our foods. Evaluating the origin of modern cops and cattle, and the way they have been bred over centuries to perform best for productivity, human-desired traits, and resistance to environmental stress will be used to gain knowledge on genome architecture and genes regulating agronomic traits. This will be complemented by looking at modern breeding approaches to tackle the challenges in food security. A basis for this seminar are the lectures "Genomes" and "Forward and Reverse Genetics".

The seminar requires that students present a selected topic in the form of an oral presentation and moderate the subsequent discussion with their peers. Each presentation should not last longer than 30min. To keep to the time is a fundamental quality criterion. Presenters must prepare two scientific questions related to your topic to initiate and guide the scientific discussion. The week before your presentation you must provide i) key scientific literature to share with your peers; ii) a written summary of your presentation content, and iii) discuss your preliminary presentation file with the lecturer. The provided literature and summary must be read by all participants. All students have to be prepared for each seminar with at least two questions related to the topic and contribute to the discussion.

Credits depend on regular and timely attendance to the seminar and active participation is required! Your presentation and your participation in the seminar will be marked! The presentation will be assessed by formal criteria (slide design, structural requirements), by contents (depth and breadth of knowledge), and by presentation style (speech, interaction with the audience).

The seminar will start with an introduction to the overall theme Food & Genes, and for students to be assigned their topic. A guide how to search and read literature, and how to present a seminar will be given.
