This course examines how (concepts of) identity were shaped by political and geographical borders in ancient China. Students will survey a selection of historical texts from a variety of literary genres where authors explore the interplay of borders and identity formation — as mediated through war, diplomacy, trade, diaspora, and change of regime. These readings will be supplemented by anthropological studies of corresponding theories of identity, border, and liminality, to investigate processes of assimilation and segregation.

Prerequisite: Basic proficiency in Classical and modern Chinese required.
