Building platforms and capacities for intercultural exchange and communication may be the intervention needed for our increasingly fractured society today. Yet, even though diversity initiatives have proliferated, the principles and tools of cultural exchange are seldom discussed and assessed.
This course draws on selected discourses and collections of material from the history and archaeology of East and Central Asia to examine the preconditions for cultural exchange and transmission and the underlying processes of change from the standpoints of cultural and evolutionary anthropology. Our case studies will touch on the subjects of race, diaspora, colonialism, globalization, cosmopolitanism, heritage preservation and spatial politics.
Sinology students are encouraged to use sources in modern and Classical Chinese for their class assignments.
