Japan in International Relations

In this course, we explore Japan's evolving role in international relations against the backdrop of the manifold current challenges to the established military and economic power relations. The course is thus designed to foster a comprehensive view on Japan’s international relations. While we will address national security through studying Japan’s military policy reforms, we will also highlight economic security in an international context. Themes to be addressed in this realm include, e.g., global trade dynamics and international labor migration. Importantly, beyond state actors, non-traditional actors such as members of civil society and global corporations will be in the focus of our analytical endeavors. Join us as we adapt the terminology and concepts of International Relations (IR) to reflect contemporary challenges and delve into Japan's multifaceted position in global affairs.
