The course continues training in the reading and analysis of Qing-period official sources, paying special attention to the interaction of institutional contexts, individual agency, and the transmission of ideas and knowledge. The course is simultaneously an introduction to the administrative structure, politics, and legal culture of early modern China. Designed for MA and PHD students. Several sessions will focus on documents chosen by students.
Übungsaufgabe: Annotated Translation. You will submit one substantive translation from a primary source of your choice. The source should be a document produced within the scope of the Qing state official apparatus at either the capital (Beijing) or in a province or Outer Region (Ma. tulergi golo). The annotated translation should include 1) an introduction, introducing the text, explaining its significance, and connecting it to prior scholarship; 2) a translation; and 3) footnotes explaining your translation choices. The final document should be between 2,000 and 3,000 words.
