During this Übung we will collectively translate a PRC comic book (lianhuanhua 连环画) intended for ethnic minority readers. We will read “Künga Gyeltsen and Chenghua Monastery" (棍噶扎拉参与承化寺) published in 2009 in Xinjiang. This book follows the adventures of the Tibetan warrior-monk Künga Gyeltsen (1835-1895), a "patriotic monk" who fought on behalf of the Qing state against Muslim rebels and European colonialism. This course is an opportunity to learn about artistic production and propaganda in the PRC. The translation may eventually be published online as part of the University Heidelberg's ChinaComx project (https://chinacomx.github.io). The course is intended for BA and MA students with an intermediate knowledge of Chinese.
