Ancient cultures that flourished in the vast steppe ecozone spanning the upper mid-latitudes are integral to the study of East and Central Asian history — and a rapidly growing area of research. This course offers an examination of the key findings (for this course, primarily from Russia, China, Mongolia, and Kazakhstan) that have provided critical insights into ways environment shaped human societies — and vice versa — in this vast region known for its vibrant crosscultural histories based on archaeological and ethnoarchaeological research in the last 50 years.
