Ancient cultures that flourished in the vast steppe ecozone spanning the upper mid-latitudes — a rapidly growing area of research — are integral to the study of crosscultural contact and exchange in East and Central Asian history. This course examines major findings in art and architecture—primarily from today’s Russia, China, Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan—that have offered critical insights into ways in which nomadic populations have shaped political and cultural landscapes and contributed to the development of urbanism, based on archaeological and ethnoarchaeological research from the past 50 years.
