This course introduces students to the substantive law of crimes in the U.S. The primary emphasis is on doctrines applicable to most crimes, such as actus reus, mens rea and the defenses of insanity, intoxication, mistake, duress, necessity, and self-defense. Specific crimes and theories of punishment will also be discussed in the context of selected court opinions and the Model Penal Code. This course will also place criminal law in a contemporary context by critically analyzing social justice issues and other themes related to criminal justice system reform.
