How do uncertainties influence modeling in environmental sciences?
This course will summarize necessary mathematical and statistical tools and concepts and how these are incorporated into the modeling realm.
Target audience: Advanced students and PhD students in econometrics, statistics, VWL, BWL, mathematics or computer science.
Prerequisites: Profound knowledge in matrix-algebra and econometrics (econometrics I) or statistics (linear models). Basic knowledge in univariate time series analysis is not demanded but of advantage.
Record of achievement: This course consists of two parts. The first part of „Multivariate Time Series Analysis“ is equivalent to the lecture „Multivariate Zeitreihen/Multivariate Time Series“ (3 ECTS-Credits) for statisticians; the second part can be recognised as „Ausgewählte Gebiete der theoretischen Statistik B/Selected Topics in theoretic Statistics B“ (3 ECTS-Credits). For each part there will be a separate exam that takes one hour. That is, you only have to attend the first part (see below) of the course if you want to obtain credit points for the course “Multivariate Zeitreihen”. Apart from that, the whole course is equivalent to "Time-Series Econometrics" and counts as a class for Ph.D. candidates in economics. Both exams constitute the exam you have to pass in order to obtain the "Schein" for "Time-Series Econometrics".
Altogether, there are 5 problem sets in the tutorial. Problem sheets 1, 2 (theoretical properties of VAR(p) processes), and 4 (estimation of VAR(p) processes) belong to the first part „Multivariate Zeitreihen“. Problem sheets 3 (granger-causality, impulse-response-analysis, innovations accounting) and 5 (integrated and cointegrated processes) are relevant for the second part.
P1 Mathematical Geophysics is a mandatory module in the International Master's Programme in Geophysics. It provides in-depth knowledge of mathematical methods required for geophysical modeling.

Well before the start of a semester the teacher will give a list of suitable subjects for the proseminar. The subjects may vary. They are based on the knowledge the students have acquired in calculus, algebra, probability theory or possibly also basic actuarial knowledge. The proseminar is aimed at giving a basic introduction to subjects of mathematics or actuarial sciences that are not covered by the basic and in-depth modules.

Riemannian Geometry is the study of manifolds with a Riemannian metric. In this course, we will begin by discussing basic geometric objects (geodesics, Jacobi fields, curvature). Particular emphasis will be given to geometric interpretation and intuition behind the (analytic) objects of differential geometry, and how to use the analysis to answer geometric questions.
Once the basic notions have been covered, the course will discuss connections between geometry and topology of manifolds, and comparison geometry. The latter allows to interpret curvature bounds in a purely metric fashion, and leads towards metric geometry and geometric group theory.
Prerequisites: Differentiable manifolds (including vector bundles and linear connections). Some topology is helpful, but not necessary.
Suitable for: Masters students in mathematics, TMP students
Time and date: The lecture takes place Tuesday/Thursday 10-12 in room A027. There is a problem session which takes place Wednesday 10-12 in room A027 (starting in week 2 of the semester)Well before the start of a semester the teacher will give a list of suitable subjects for the proseminar.
